Daily Dose of Music – Mr Lemons

Glen Phillips was the opener at Skipper’s on Friday night.  Do you know who he is?  A few of you, but probably not many of you.  If I gave you a hint and said "Toad the Wet Sprocket" would you have more of a clue?  Now more of you are nodding your head, right?  And with links to this and this I’ve probably got almost everyone up to speed on who I’m talking about… so anyway, he was the opener

I had no idea Toad had broken up, even though it happened a really long time ago.  Shows how up I am on alternative bands who hit it big, eh?  Well whatever, Toad’s loss was Melissa’s gain.  I am guessing that having Glen on tour with her has been better for her than having Tegan & Sara with her.  There were an awful lot of Glen Phillips people in the audience (or Toad people) – folks who had not heard of Melissa and were there just for Glen.  That simply doesn’t happen very often – even on the rare occasion that someone comes for the opener and only the opener (Tegan & Sara and Michelle Malone would be the big two – Anne Heaton, Erin Mckeown and Edie Carey to a lesser extent) they’re still the same "type of music fans" so she’s reaching the same type of people with those openers.  So – way to go Fleming and Melissa and Glen – because I assume Glen is reaping the same sort of benefit here.

Anyway back to Glen – good show.  He was cute and sang a good mix of his songs and songs from his past life.  He talked softly about his family (I hope his wife is feeling better, his kids haven’t starved and his friends are still his friends when he gets home) and he talked softly but firmly about Walmart (they’re *****) and Costco (they’re big box but pay a living wage).  He held up under the strain of not knowing if he was going to have a crowd of unhappy dykes to deal with.  He played an incredibly long set in front of a very mixed crowd of people – couple hundred there to see him, 3xs that many who weren’t there to see him.  He didn’t wear socks.  I liked him.

Visit his website and while you’re there click his myspace link – music is there and it’s good stuff.  Visit his blog it’s new and nice and quiet, post a comment so he’ll update more often.  And most importantly, if you’re in the Charleston SC area – I suggest you hurry and grab any remaining tickets for the show at the Windjammer (my only favorite bar in the world) and go see him (and Melissa while you’re at it) – tickets may still be available for the Freebird show as well for you Jax/St Augustine folks.

**edited to add…Melissa has cancelled her shows through the 11th but is scheduled to appear (I’m guessing this isn’t a performance) at the Delray Film Festival where Decade will be screened.  Both the cancellations and the film festival are good, in my opinion.   FYI Glen Phillips will still perform at the previously scheduled events so don’t get a refund, go and enjoy Glen!**

Ourland

Ack! I should have stuck with not reading the sequel to Herland because With Her in Ourland was a disappointment. Boring, boring, boring – but that’s what Michelle said about Herland… I wonder if she would like Ourland better?

I didn’t really need to look at “our” history through the eyes of a Herlander – or her husband’s eyes, for that matter. I already Blame the Patriarchy for everything as it is. Well there are some things I do blame my mom for, but those tend to be familial issues and running over dogs and stuff like that.

Blah!

Daily Dose of Cookies – Binge Eating

Let’s start with a blast from my blogging past…

February 21, 2005
Nutter Butter Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookie – ADDICTION

By JustDenise

I have a problem!  I think I’ve become addicted to Nutter Butters!  I have never been faced with this type of a problem and it’s sort of scaring me!

We bought those big lunch box packages that have three different kinds of cookies – Nutter Butter, Chips Ahoy and Oreo, I believe.  These are the "mini" sized cookies so they seemed sort of harmless to me and I had a bag one day last week when I was starving but the boss had me chained to the computer.  Before I knew it, I’d eaten TWO MORE BAGS within just a few moments.

Well, ummm, same thing happened a couple of days later – three of those mini bags bit the dust before I knew what had happened.

Now today, I’m hungry, and I found myself digging through those boxes of mini, lunchbox sized bags of cookies hoping and almost praying (you know I don’t really pray) for Nutter Butters.

What is going on?  Do you think someone like spiked my package of cookies with some weird drug that is making me crave these things?  Or is it Nabisco that is adding something to cause my craving?  Is it the trans fat, or lack thereof that’s doing this?  If I opened a bag of Chips Ahoy (which I really don’t like) would I find myself eating my way through three of those mini bags?

HELP!  Save me from the Nutter Butter Madness and please do NOT let me buy any Nutter Butters ever AGAIN!

Now, back to today’s regularly scheduled cookie binge.  Ok so it wasn’t scheduled and there was nothing regular about it.  When I said "I binged today" to TW I thought she was going to keel over laughing or at least pee her pants.  Binging is not something I do.  Not really.  Except when there are oatmealy peanut butter cookies around, it seems

You see today, I did in fact binge.  At least I feel like I binged.  It might not be a true binge to those who have binge eating disorder and stuff but it’s all relative, if you ask me.  I ate an entire sleeve of Do-si-dos. All by myself.  Not all at one time, just throughout the work day over about six hours.  That’s about 10 cookies, I think.  Might have been 11 but TW says there are 10 in a sleeve.  We don’t know for sure because there aren’t anymore left to count.  (If you’ve got a box with a full sleeve, could you count and let me know, please?)

Besides the fact that this binging thing is weird it bugs me that I ate 10 (or maybe 11) of those things.  I use to love them.  But now they taste funny, not as salty as they use to be.  It’s not the baker, I’m use to having the Little Brownie Bakers as our GS Cookie distributor.  It isn’t the trans fats, I don’t think, because these things still have trans fats.  (Man I think I probably had 8 grams of trans fats – do not tell Elaine!)  Why DID I eat 10 (or maybe 11) cookies that I didn’t even enjoy?  It wasn’t like the Nutter Butter binge, when I really did enjoy those suckers.  Every time I ate a Do-Si-Do I grumbled that they didn’t taste the same and didn’t taste as good – but still, I ate them.

No more peanut butter oatmeal type cookies are coming in this house ever again.  Nutter Butters and Do-Si-Dos are BANNED from the Flamingo House foreverrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Booking Through Thursday

Thanks to Shelly at Shelly’s Bookshelf, I’ve got a new meme to play with.

Booking Through Thursday

Today’s questions are from Marie. Thank you!

  1. Do you finish every book you start, no matter how bad it gets? Why? Until very recently the answer was a resounding YES with a lot of growling about people (my mother in particular) who never seem to finish a book.  Now, I’ve seen the light, and I often give up on a book if it just isn’t holding my attention.
  2. Do you ever sneak-read the ending before you finish the book? If so, what about the book tends to cause you to do so? Not really.  I’m sure I’ve done it before but this isn’t something I do often – or can even come up with an example of when I’ve recently done it.   I have been tempted, if there’s an unusually good character or situation.

Haven Kimmel – a blogger?

We read Haven Kimmel’s A Girl Named Zippy last year and we really liked it. So, when we saw her newest book on the shelves awhile back I reserved it at the library. I picked it up. TW read it and didn’t say much about it. I picked it up and read the intro and realized I couldn’t actually remember much about A Girl Named Zippy. Which led me to wonder why I was reading “She Got Up Off the Couch”. Maybe we didn’t like Zippy as much as we remembered?

As I read, I realized I remembered more about Zippy than I first thought. I also think that the reason I didn’t remember more at first is because Kimmel’s books read like blog entries. They do. They’re short, though most are longer than the average blog post. They read like a blogger who is sharing a family story and jazzing it up to make readers laugh. Simple and funny family stories that any of us could tell (and often do). Not that blog entries are forgettable. That’s not what I mean. It’s just that there are so many. And a story from Zippy or Up Off the Couch could have been written by a zillion bloggers – feels like it has been and those stories sometimes blend together. Bits and pieces come back to you now and again but they’re a little blurry and you have to stop and think… was that Mir’s family? or was it Jenny’s? or maybe my own?

Daily Dose of Holidays – Pig Day

Happy Pig Day!

That’s right – Pig Day.  I haven’t thrown a decent Pig Party in YEARS which is a shame because my Pig Parties use to be legendary.  Pig recipes, pig poetry, pig movies and TV and books, pig games and pig drawings.

Click the Pig to draw yours!

Wanna celebrate Pig Day?  Post a comment about your favorite pig, your favorite pork recipe or your favorite pig poetry if you like.  Or better yet, post your own Pig Day blog entry (just let me know if you do, so I can come and visit).  **Edited to add a link to my friends in Indiana celebrating Pig Day with a photo of 4H kids and pig showing and Michelle talks about Boris**

Oh and one other thing – now when I think about pigs, I think about my blog friend Fat Blogger because he had a cute little piggy image on his blog.  He went fishing and is due back any time now – so stop by and welcome him home.

Daily Dose of Life – Plans Update

Another month has passed so it’s time for my 101 Things in 1001 Days update.  Not a ton of progress but some – and I got close in others, which was interesting (and umm enjoyable, too)…

I need to work on that whole reading classics thing.  Michelle seems to be set on Bleak House, I hate Dickens but I suppose this would be as good a place as any to start.

The Blogrolls got a facelift yesterday and they’re going to stay this way through the summer – the New Finds will change and I’m sure my Technorati Favorites will change as well.  (50 is not enough – I need 100!)  If you were on my Blogroll, it’s likely that you’re still on my Technorati list.  I think I’ll add my aggregator list as well for the truly curious…

I really need to clean out the spurls.  That’s so time consuming.  I need a full day for that and I have no idea where I’ll find a full day.

I think RJ has finally picked out a color for her walls – in fact I’m so sure of it that I’m going to go and buy the darn paint so she can’t change her mind for the zillionth time.  Then we can get her walls painted, bookshelves decorated and get a nice new dresser in there to replace the antique.

E learned lanyards more quickly than just about any child I have ever attempted to teach lanyards too.  I expected her to pick it up quickly but not quite that quickly.  I’ll give it a go with RJ in a couple of weeks.

I actually SAVED money this month.  Not a lot but some.  Even with Michelle’s huge birthday shopping spree.

WLC templates has been an interesting exercise in futility.  I started.  Changed my mind about the process and never got back to it.  Thought about it some more on Sunday and attempted to write a plan of attack and scrapped that too.  Keeping good records for performance appraisals has also been in issue.  Someone else has data I need with which to do this and those folks aren’t being forthcoming with that data.  I need a new plan of attack for that too.  Or maybe I should give up and just keep winging it each quarter, it’s not like anyone notices or anyone I work with has a better process than that.  😉

Not a bad month – all things considered.  Let’s see how we do in March, shall we?

Daily Dose of Stuff – Monday

Lee has created a new meme!  I have brilliant (and weird) friends, don’t I?  Welcome to what is this doing in my house, monday!  This is the second week and my first entry.  Enjoy!  Join the fun and talk about weird stuff that is in YOUR house…

Feb_002_1

This little piece of art (you should definitely click) has been in our home since shortly after we moved in together, in 2002.  We picked it up at a "rummage sale" to support the at that time NEW PRIDE Center.  This was a really horrible excuse for a rummage sale.  There was absolutely NOTHING worth having.  There wasn’t much to choose from, for that matter.  Apparently gay folks and their supporters aren’t good at donating rummage stuff.  Rather than leave empty handed, I convinced TW that we needed this truly HORRIBLE picture.  TW giggled and agreed.  The folks running the rummage sale giggled and agreed.  I forked over my $20 bucks and we giggled all of the way home.

We wondered what exactly the artist had intended us to see in the picture.  A woman? cut out reproductive organs?  Heck, I saw a coatimundi in it but at that time nobody had seen Survivor Panama so I was the only one who knew what a coatimundi was.  What do YOU think this is suppose to be a painting of?

Daily Dose of Food – Pot Luck

TW has been telling me for more than a week… "Don’t let me forget the cheese and crackers.  Preferably one of the cheeses listed on the jar of ginger stuff"  or "Don’t let me forget the potluck on Monday."  I have an email sitting at the top of my inbox, where it has been for a week, with that first quote in it.  Today, during synchro, she asked me not to let her forget the potluck.  She hasn’t forgotten, neither have I.

Well the potluck is tomorrow.  Love the Irish – a combo Valentine’s Day/St Patrick celebration.  We didn’t forget but we also have not actually purchased cheese – or crackers.  The first problem I had was that I didn’t know what "the jar of ginger stuff" was.  Without knowing that, I couldn’t know what kind of cheese to get, could I?  So I didn’t.

I just read 18 email digests for work.  With each closed digest, I saw that "Don’t let me forget…" email and I asked her several times what she planned to do about it.  Her first response can’t be blogged ’cause I pledged no profanity on this blog.  Her second response was "Do we have any cream cheese?"  Huh?  We went from "preferably one of the cheeses listed on the jar of ginger stuff" to "cream cheese"???  Whatever.  We might have cream cheese.  But we don’t have crackers.  Unless cheese-nips count.  And I don’t think they do.

She heads to the kitchen and brings me back the "jar of ginger stuff".  It’s a jar of ginger stuff.  From the Ginger People (I really like their crystalized ginger pieces) and it does list cream cheese as an option.  It also lists oatmeal.  We have oatmeal.  She could make everyone bowls of oatmeal!  That works, right?  She laughs but says no.

She does not want to get back in the car.  I, in case you haven’t guessed, am not volunteering.  So now here is her potluck contribution… Gummi Candies.  In weird shapes, like hamburger shapes and stuff like that.  She bought them when we went for our IKEA/Michelle birthday trip to Atlanta and when I said "why are you buying that?" she ignored me – only to discover when we got home that not a living soul in this house (except her) will eat those things.  Now she wants to take them to potluck.  At work.  With a bunch of home economists.

I live with strange people.  And I am still not volunteering to drive to the grocery store tonight.  Or in the morning.  She can take the Gummis.

Daily Dose of Questions – Search

Answers to those arriving here via search…

To the person in Chili looking for dingbats car, I have it and you can pick it up anytime.  If you’re planning on driving it to South America well ummm good luck.  I can include a phone number for a mechanic if you like.

To the person in the UK looking for empty Voss Water bottles.  I’ve got them, quite a few of them, but first I want to know why you want them.  Are you like TW? Do you have some plot to use an as seen on TV bottle cutter to make weird stuff that you don’t need from them?

Does a toilet trained dog mean stubborn?  Ummm no, I believe it is the other way around.

To anyone looking for cupcake toppers, (and there are an awful lot of you) – good luck!  I am considering opening a cupcake topper store, I’ll get back to you if I find the time and energy to do so.

To "mom ran over a…" just know you aren’t alone.  Moms seem to run over everything from lemons to peacocks to homeless men.  The search results for "mom ran over a…" are incredible.

And those of you looking for advice regarding sons and skirts… bless your sweet hearts.  Here’s my advice…. Be supportive.  Kids wear all sorts of weird clothes.  They’re trying to find themselves.  Sometimes it takes a skirt for a boy to find himself, or to find herself.  Your son is still your child and will always be your child.  Sometimes they decide skirts are no longer for them, just like girls sometimes make this decision.  Sometimes they find that skirts are exactly who they are and that’s good.  Knowing who you are in this world is difficult enough – imagine having to "be" a boy and wear a skirt in order to find out.  Thank (insert deity) I didn’t have to do such a thing.  Thank goodness you probably didn’t either.  Sons who find themselves when they put on a skirt are incredibly strong people.  Support them.  Applaud their strength and their courage.  And if you really still need help with this – dtanton at gmail dot com works.
