Elizabeth Edwards – I used to like you

geez. First you called Coulter and asked for an apology – ridiculous and done only for some publicity and some sympathy and to stir anti Coullter folks up. Now your questioning Clinton’s commitment to women’s issues because she isn’t a walking women’s movement machine. Give me a break Mrs Edwards. Clinton isn’t focusing solely on women’s issues, she’s talking about issues that face all Americans. If she was talking more about women’s issues you’d have something to say about THAT and you’d probably find some fabulous way to spin it. You are very good at that.

Mrs Edwards, If you want to address Clinton’s position on the various “women’s issues” then you go right ahead and do that. But don’t tiptoe along that “Hillary acts like a man” line.

It’s politics and Mrs Edwards plays it better than her husband does. Too bad she won’t be running, seriously. She’s one hell of a politician. Which makes me dislike her – and her husband. He’s running a distant third with me, possibly because Mrs Edwards is too damn good at what she does – she’s too good at playing political games. I’m really tired of games.

Prius owners are snobs!

As you’re obviously aware, I’ve been planning to buy a Prius whaley boy car for a very long time. I’m always amused by the stories about why Prius owners buy the Prius. It appears as though green living and saving money are at the bottom of the list of reasons for the purchase. Ego and image boosting is high – the search for identity.

The Prius is not a pretty car. In fact, it’s ugly. (Which is part of the reason why it’s called a whaley boy car – Fluke is the real reason.) I want one for three reasons, all of which say something about me.

  • I love Christopher Moore. I loved Fluke. I love the Whaley Boys. I need a Whaley Boy car!
  • The car IS ugly. I am drawn to things that society does not think are “beautiful”. I’m not Ani who says “everything she loves is ugly” but I can relate to that.
  • I’m the frugal sort. I’ve read all of the articles that indicate the Prius may not be as cost-effective as we think. But, based on my driving habits, I think it probably is going to be a money saver in the long run.

The green thing does play a role in my decision to buy a Prius. Definitely. But like many other people, it’s not at the top of my list. It’s 4th. I’m not a great green human, but I do try. I’m also not a snob but I have to agree that an awful lot of Prius owners are.

Shhh it’s a secret….

Thanks for talking about this, Nick. I look forward to your recap of the great debate and wish I was going to be there to see it myself. The Citadel, of all places. It’s sort of surreal for this gay Charlestonian.

A question that I hope arises at the debate is the already asked and answered question about Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. At The Citadel there is an underground group of students that no person in this country, except for me, likes to talk about. LGB (purposefully left out the T on this one for obvious reasons) students at The Citadel will be wanting to know which candidate will let them speak? Don’t believe that there are LGB students at The Citadel, well think again. I hope that one of these candidates will stand up for these students and allow them to serve our country and be who they are at the same time.

I really need a shower

Just thought I’d share that since I blogged light yesterday and will probably blog light today. Shopping with little kids and cuddling babies in the mall set my workday back a few hours so shower first, work second, blog last.

Except for this post. Oh and at ClubMom which I haven’t written and can’t remember what I was planning to write and I don’t seem to have a July outline for ClubMom which I usually try to have.

Did I mention I really need a shower?

Randomness

Well. Here I am. Trying to come up with eight random things because Nickie, who I love, tagged me. If you list random things do they then become less than random? And is anything really random since anything you think of is probably triggered by something going on in your life anyway? I don’t know if “random” really exists in the way we tend to think it exists.

Onward with eight.

1) I am the finder of lost objects and not lost objects. Nobody in this house bothers to even look for anything, they just ask me if I know where X is and generally I do. Except today, which means this item is not so random. ‘Cause something is missing and I have no idea where it could be since all of my ideas have come up empty.

2) It bugs me a lot when I do not know where stuff is. Or have a general idea of where something is. You’d think this would mean my house is neat and organized, it doesn’t. It just means I pay attention to what’s in the clutter so I can find things. Except for today, apparently.

3) I bought BlogHerCon shoes! This is a big deal. I rarely buy anything for myself and to buy an article of clothing or shoes is more rare than me not being able to find whatever someone is looking for. They are special shoes. Wanna see them?

4) Looking around and trying to come up with a random thing is difficult. As soon as I think of something I don’t think it’s random. Is it random to say that yesterday I thought our bedroom was pretty tidy, all things considered, but today I’m thinking it’s time to get out the trash bag and do a Fly Lady Fling everyday for the rest of the week. Maybe I’ll find the missing items…

5) I profess to dislike Fly Lady because of that whole shoes and makeup first thing in the morning requirement, but I have a secret love for her. TW has suspected this for awhile and I confirmed it earlier in the week. This made her nervous and caused her to wonder what I’ve been flinging during my 15 minute a day fling. Hahaha she doesn’t know where anything is in the house so she’ll never figure it out.

6) Which reminds me, our garbage can is too small. Our city garbage can had a big hole in the back so TW earned her keep by calling the trash folks and asking for a new one. They brought one a couple of weeks later and it’s smaller than the original garbage can. Far too small for a family of 5 (which is what we were at the time) and 3xs too small for the family of 8 that we’ve become again now that the little kids are home. I need to call and get them to bring us the proper size can. Soon.

7) We also have a new kitchen garbage can. Actually we bought two. The first one TW picked out and I quietly hated. But she hated the original garbage can (which I picked out) so I figured fair was fair. Which doesn’t make sense since I am the one who uses the kitchen garbage can the most. Anyway, that can lasted about 2 days and then everyone in the house was expressing hatred for it. We moved it up to the kid bathroom and I purchased one at Publix that we all seem to like more. Though it has its problems, too. At Home Depot last weekend I saw my old original garbage can and caressed it fondly while TW was not looking.

8) It’s sort of like my hairbrush. The pink goody hairbrush that I love so much but have difficulty finding a replacement for. It’s so hard to find a replacement that when TW did find them, she bought several. And one is still in the packaging unused because I’m afraid I will never find another one like it again. So while that one sits in the packaging, unused, I struggle along with other hairbrushes that I dislike.

There you go, eight bits of randomness from my life. Should I tag people or just encourage others to play as they wish? I think I’ll tag – but I’ll go track down some newbie people at BlogHer and give them some link love. I’ll be back with links later. But feel free to play too, if the spirit of randomness moves you.

Tagging:
The Worst Mother
The Milk Bar
Miss Grace’s Disgrace

Update: Because I know you were concerned about that missing item, it has been found. In the place I should have known it would be – Christopher’s room. When something goes missing and is not in any of the spots it should be in – it’s in his room. I wonder where missing things will end up when he moves out. Probably at his apartment.

Is it because she’s a dyke?

Finally! I knew there was a reason why The Lesbian Question blog has not disappeared from my blog feeds. A good topic has appeared, with a very good question.

Do I like musicians simply because they are lesbians or do I REALLY like their music?

My first instinct was to say that I really do like their music. But, after reflecting on this for a couple of days, it’s more complicated than that.

I liked Etheridge’s first two albums and never realized she was a lesbian. I’m old. She wasn’t out. I was living a different life and not really paying attention to that sort of thing anyway. We paid a lot for tickets to see her in Atlanta a few years ago. I doubt we’ll ever pay to see her live again. I don’t like her more recent albums very much at all but I’m still buying them because, well, because she’s Etheridge. And yes, part of that is because she’s a lesbian.

I’m not a huge Indigo Girls fan. I think Amy Ray is HOT but I’ve never bought one of their CDs and I don’t plan on buying one. I have a few of my favorite Indigo Girls songs on my iRiver and I love them on the old Rock for Choice cd (It Won’t Take Long). I doubt we’ll ever see them live again (we did attend a show for Damon records and they both wound up on stage for the finale – that’s enough for me. And TW saw them live a few years ago with her ex-husband, which was interesting and a whole ‘nother story…)

Ani, I adore but her sexuality (whatever direction she’s leaning toward right now) has nothing to do with it. I’ve bought some CDs and plan to buy the retrospective coming out this fall. I’ve paid to see her and suspect I’ll pay to see her again and again and again. My dream show is happening all fall with MF and Ani together. Unfortunately, they aren’t coming south so I’ll be living vicariously through photos and videos and blog entries.

I found Ferrick years ago in the way most lesbians seem to find her – DRIVE – now, it’s my least favorite song. If I only liked MF because of her orientation, that would be ridiculous, she’s not the best role model for a lesbian (in my oh so humble opinion).

I have been known to try other music simply because of the artist’s orientation – but I don’t keep buying over and over again if the music isn’t good. I don’t keep buying event tickets if the music isn’t good.

I could go on and on and talk about Tegan & Sara, Chris Williamson, k.d, Catie Curtis and on and on but it all comes down to the music.

To borrow from MF again:

Whether you be queer, straight, bi or trans.
Whether you be a hippie, gypsy or queer.
Everybody is welcome here.
‘Cause it’s about the music.

BlogHer Con 07 Photo Scavenger Hunt

Here’s an interesting little game created by the folks at Cool Mom Picks. Very interesting, but possibly too easy. If you’re going to play, come find me – I can probably fill several of those categories for you… I guess it would be cheating for me to tell you that my cell phone is red… or well, I won’t tell you the rest but if you find me I can probably guarantee you a good 50 points (particularly if you find me during a food break…)

Daily Dose of Cupcakes

homesweethome.jpgSince the little kids are returning from their jaunt abroad, today’s cupcakes are “Home Sweet Home” related. I like the silver charms but they colorful house magnets remind me of post it notes and TW has a thing for post it notes. As you may remember, I hate people who say “I heart…” but I guess some people like that stuff so they would probably like these. I am a Wizard of Oz fan and like nothing better than to see TW shudder at the flying monkeys, so I’d go for There’s No Place Like Home keychains, instead.
