Daily Dose of Stuff – Monday

I’m jealous of Lee’s What is this doing in my house, Monday entry.  No fair! She should definitely send those to Florida!

Shell_002
This little toy I’m sharing today has history, or more importantly, memories.  This was my grandmother’s and everytime we would visit, we’d pull it out of the blue cabinet and we’d make a huge mess with the chips and the decks of cards stored along with it.  Grandma didn’t have a whole lot of toys specifically for her grandchildren.  In fact she didn’t have any.  We played with her toys – the poker chips, huge jewely boxes of Sarah Coventry, her weird stuffed animals, odd little gadgets that I never understood but was fascinated by – and of course, the rubber/plastic fruit.

The "old fashioned" chips are missing from this but the chip caddy still makes me smile an awful lot – and that’s why this weird thing is in my house – finally! (My brother finally handed it over to me on my last trip to Charleston.  Now if he’d give up my secretary…)

Here are links to others playing the game – if you’re playing, feel free to add your link!

Daily Dose of Cupcake Toppers

In honor of Mir and Chickadee, this week’s installment of cupcake topper goodness kung fu fun, in a plastic bubble! Several search results indicated I could find both male and female martial arts toppers but upon click-thru I discovered a shortage of the female variety. Interesting. Lure us in with the promise of girls and then provide us only boys. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

karte.jpgIt looks like these little plastic bubble karate kids come in both genders and are cuter than the generic kung fu figure anyway.

Happy Birthday, Chickadee (and Mir!) and all you Karate Kids out there.

Daily Dose of Stuff – Monday

Nuthinfancy is on vacation so I may be the only one posting "What is this doing in my house, Monday" but that’s ok because my entry is good.  And she’ll be sorry she went on vacation before seeing it… but first, some background so you understand why my entry is so "good…

Monday night I had some really odd dreams.  One of them was about, well, it was about Jesus.  I won’t go into the gory details but I will tell you that throughout the dream E and her rabbit sang "Jesus Loves Me".  I don’t think I’ve ever dreamt about Jesus before.  (have you?)  I have attributed the odd dream to the reading of Whale Season on Sunday (I finished it on Monday).  No, I’m not heading toward some spiritual crisis or finding my religion or anything else so don’t bother suggesting it.  Anyway, it was just weird enough that I didn’t really want to talk about it.  I did, however, find myself singing "Jesus loves me" off and on for a couple of days.  Also weird since that hasn’t happened since E was gifted with her Jesus loves me singing rabbit a year ago, at Easter of course.

Anyway, I was coming off of that weird dream and the weirder fixation on the song on Wednesday when today’s What’s this doing in my house Monday item popped onto my radar.  I headed to the backyard with the dogs, for some fresh air and to water the garden in hopes of keeping myself from saying a lot of things I didn’t really want or need to say.  Sounds like a good idea, right?  Right.  As I went out the back door and stepped over Chanel’s dog food bowl I noticed something IN Chanel’s bowl.  Odd.  Jakey has never allowed a trace of food to be leftover in either his bowl or hers so I looked more closely.  What the… What the heck is JOSEPH doing in Chanel’s bowl??

Stuff_002_4
Yes, it’s Joseph.  From a nativity.  It looks a little familiar but most Joseph’s from the nativity look alike to me, so I’m really not 100% sure this Joseph did come from one of our nativities.  I mean it must have, otherwise how would it have gotten into Chanel’s bowl?  But then again, how did it get there in the first place?  Four months after Christmas? When TW insists all decorations (shhh she’s troubled about last week’s Christmas tree photos) are put away before New Years?

OK maybe the dogs dug into one of the decoration boxes without me noticing it.  That could happen because they are stored in the garage and the garage is a mess.  Let’s assume that happened.  Why just this one piece? Jake is a very thorough dog.  When he gets into something, he REALLY gets into it.  So why aren’t more decorations floating around the house?  Let’s pretend this was just "found" by one of the dogs and we somehow didn’t manage to get it put away to start with… so why no chew marks? teeth marks? drool?  on it?  I know you can’t tell from the picture but it’s really in ok shape considering it has definitely been removed from a nativity where it was once "glued" to the manger.

It’s in my house and probably belongs here because TW has a fondness for the nativity.  But it’s weird that it appeared, out of nowhere, last week, in a dog food bowl.

What weirdness is in your house?

Daily Dose of 101 – Update

As far as I’m concerned, April is over.  April has been one of those months that I really dislike – lots of really great things happened and lots of really not great things and very few normal, in between days.  I hate extremes, I prefer the middle.  Now, onto the list update.

Looking at it, you’d think April was a month when nothing much happened.  Some stuff has been crossed off the list, RJ’s dresser was purchased but not due to arrive til next week.  I took a photo a day (a heck of a lot more than that, actually) for a full month, (That was sort of fun and not fun at the same time.  It led me to an idea for a meme but I probably won’t do it or if I do, I won’t be telling you about it… so don’t ask.) The cat closet bins were easier than I thought, they were full of linens.  Oh my, the linens we have in this house.  Sheesh.  I thought they contained odds and ends accumulated from various and sundry lives that have been lived by the members of this house.  I’m glad they didn’t, but finding they contained more linens was annoying.

More books were read, more posts responded to, more money donated to charity, blogrolls updated, music downloaded, etc… sounds like a normal month, doesn’t it?  Lists can be deceiving, as can blogs, as can people.

Onward to May…

Daily Dose of Cupcake Toppers

dollarsignspik.jpgThis week’s cupcake topper celebration is in honor of one of the most interesting weeks I’ve had in quite some time. Many thanks to all who contributed to such a memorable experience. I truly don’t know what I would do without you in my life. Here’s to many, many more years together.

Wouldn’t these little dollar signs be terrific cupcake toppers for folks who got a raise, paid off their credit cards (go monkey!), sold their house, paid off their house, paid off their college loans or ummm won the lottery (too bad nobody wins those things anyway)? 😉 You bet they would. Buy some, keep them around the house because you really never know when a winning lottery ticket is going to come your way. Or something.

Daily Dose of Laundry

dryer.jpgRemember when I ranted a few months ago about laundry? Well I have some advice for you regarding laundry because I am obviously an expert. Until that little rant of mine I was feeling like an expert failure at laundry but not today, oh no, not today.

Yes, I still have a lot of laundry. No, it still doesn’t get put in drawers immediately. But, I have been able to keep the laundry monster at bay. No, no, not by stuffing Michelle into the dryer, though there have been moments… No, I’ve kept it at bay by actually DOING the laundry! That’s the secret. You have to do it. Every single day. Even if you are sick. Even if your g/f is incredibly ill. Even if your kids have last minute projects that they didn’t bother to tell you about until, well, the last minute. Even if you are driving all over the southern part of the USA because one kid or another has some event to attend or some need that must be fulfilled. Even if your boss has driven you INSANE (not that my boss would ever do such a thing). If you do laundry every single day… it gets DONE. Really. I’m not kidding you.

I have a lot of visitors to this blog who are looking for laundry. I’m assuming they are looking for laundry tips or laundry stories or maybe someone to do their laundry and not just randomly searching the internet for laundry. I’m not really sure though since most people seem to just type “laundry” in their search engine of choice (which thankfully is Google and not Lycos). I’ve also heard from other sources that kid laundry is a real problem – everything from not having matching socks, not having clean sheets so kids have to sleep in chairs, to not being able to remove stains. I understand these issues too and I can possibly offer some help.

First, refer to that second paragraph. If your kids don’t have matching socks or clean sheets then the answer is to do the laundry. Every day. You might also suggest the children look under their beds and in their toy bins for socks. Oh and E’s favorite sock hiding place, err storage place, is between the cushions of the couch. Ask her, she’ll tell you with that sly, imp-like smile. If socks are peeking out of the corner of the couch, then they are hers.

Sheets are a different story. Sometimes I think children mess up their sheets simply because they like sleeping in their chairs. Do your kids have a comfortable chair in their room? RJ adores her mushroom chair and prefers to sleep on it, book in hand, and will do so unless we assist her out of it while she’s half asleep or pretending to be half asleep. Recliners are also notorious child sleep luring vessels. Christopher use to beg to sleep in his recliner, but then again Christopher is weird and always has been so maybe this isn’t your issue? Oh and kids like to mess up their sheets late at night simply because it means they can do that family bed thing they’ve heard so much about on the playground. Family bed people are trouble and their children should all be homeschooled so they don’t pass that nastyness around to normal kids (don’t flame me, that was a joke).

Stains can be handled quickly and easily. My preferred method is never to provide a child with clothing you would be upset or angry about if it got a stain on it. If you simply can’t live your life that way then I would suggest some therapy because kids and stains go together. It’s in the handbook they give you when you leave the hospital. Ask your pediatrician if you don’t believe me or stole a child and it didn’t have its booklet attached. (Hmmm has Dr Moser blogged about that yet? He should, if he hasn’t – even if he isn’t a Ped.) If you’re in therapy and it isn’t helping then prescription meds could probably be prescribed by your doctor. If you’re already on them then you have to turn to product for assistance. No, not hair product. Cleaning product.

We’ve tried them all, grudgingly. (Well I’ve tried them grudgingly, TW likes trying new things so she tries them with glee like my oldest dauther… coincidence that they share a birthday? I don’t think so) None of the products work very well on tough stains like paint, ballpoint pen, a bowl of BBQ or red wine, (which reminds me, don’t give your kids red wine – it stains and you’re just asking for trouble. This is another reason why we don’t have alcohol in this house.) If you must use product, buy the cheapest one. Read the bottle and follow the directions on the bottle. And pray. Even if you are an athiest or a humanist or a Unitarian. Pray. Jesus loves you and it couldn’t hurt. After you’re done praying and trying product and you discover there is still a little stain don’t blame me or Jesus or your child or your therapist. Instead, reach into your special toy box and pull out the magic wand! (No not that one, sheesh) The magic wand is really called the Electric Stain Remover and it works. I kid you not.

I bought this thing for both Jenn and TW for Christmas (They share the same birthday and like cleaning gadgets so this is an acceptable Christmas gift. It may not be the right gift for your g/f or your daughter). You’ve heard of “As Seen on TV” gadgets – well the new trend here is “As Seen on Engadget” (or popgadget or gizmodo or whatever your gadget blog of cohice is) and that is where we saw this special magic wand. TW tried it first on some small and very old blood stains. By very old I mean months old, been through the washer and dryer and product cycle half dozen times old. The special magic wand REMOVED THE STAINS and made cool zappping noises in the process. Then she tracked down a white t-shirt that had gotten mildewed because it was in the bottom of a rarely used laundry basket with a child’s wet swim suit and towel (guess whos) for a week before I discovered it (remember when I didn’t do laundry every day?). We tried product and washing and I thought the shirt was a goner. It’s a special kid created t-shirt so it was still here looking all sad and mildewy. Those stains are now GONE completely. I’m not kidding. Gone. It took time, there was a good bit of mildew, but TW was patient and now she happily wears her butterfly tshirt made by swimsuit kid and there is no mildew on it. (There is coffee on it after last wearing but I have no doubt the special wand can take care of that this weekend.)

There you go folks – all of the laundry advice a harried laundry hater, stain fixated person could ever want. Go and launder. You can thank me later. But I’m not doing your laundry so if that is what you are looking for, keep searching. Try Lycos.

Daily Dose of Good

Good things should always be shared, preferably on Thursday.  I’m not sure why it must happen on Thursday, the alliteration isn’t all that great (Three Good Things Thursday???) it just seems right.  Maybe to kick off a weekend?  Maybe to regroup from the sucky people who you are forced to deal with during the first part of the week?  Maybe just because the Gods or Fates or (Insert Diety) deem it so.  Whatever.  Here are the good things, not limited to three because I make the rules… Just because I make the rules, that doesn’t mean you can’t share your own good things, and because I am "like God" (according to a couple of children who shall remain nameless) I will allow you to share more than three, too.  See, I am God-like aren’t I?  All giving and loving and stuff.  Whoever said I was evil and lacking in compassion, anyway???

On with the good, out with the suck, shall we?

* I found the blog I’d been looking for – it took three days of Blogmad hades but I did it! And it was good.

* My friend’s daughter gained weight which is better than me gaining weight.

* Chemistry is finished, finally.  I soooo hate chemistry and I didn’t even have to take the class.

* Christopher likes his classes.  So far.  (fingers crossed?)

* My father discovered hidden "Plain Grandma" treasures and has decided I can have them.  This is a blessing.  He tends to sell these things in yardsales or put them on u-Hauls and then crash u-Hauls thus destroying all good Plain Grandma-ness.

* At least one of the treasures is orange! Like the bedroom! TW is so happy!

* Retro is in.  I’m one heck of a happy woman because of this little tidbit.

* April is almost over. (shoot, I forgot my brother’s birthday! Must remedy that quickly before I break the string and cannot scratch item 69 off of my list in 11 months!)

* Until this week nobody had ever suggested I led an extravagant life.  Even Filipina maids who made $10 a week had never suggested such a thing.  I’m in heaven.  I have arrived.  If I had only known how easy it was, I’d have done it sooner!

* Laundry. is. finished. (expanded post on this wonder later in the day, I know you’re anxious for that)

* I have not been to the emergency room for a very long time.  Touch and go but it has been avoided.

* My ex husband IS moving south.  (I suppose he could always change his mind between now and May 31 but as of today, it’s official.  There is no sarcasm in this good thing folks, not that I ever partake in sarcasm.  I’m happy about this.  For a half dozen reasons I will share with all of you lucky people – later, after he arrives but before he ticks me off and I wish him back to Jersey or Iraq or some other place where the President decides we need to fight a war)

And on that note, I’ll say adieu to my good things list.  I wouldn’t want those of you less fortunate than I (those of you not living extravagant lives hahahaha) to feel all woeful and pitiful (woefulness is only allowed on Wednesday and pitifulness is allowed absolutely never unless you are a cute two year old or an idiot ex husband – another post on both of those will come at some point, no doubt).

Life is good, ladies and gents.  I swear it is.  You believe me don’t you?  Of course you do.

Daily Dose of Women – Obsession

I’ve been reading a blog called Ive been cryn for almost a month.  After awhile I began to question why I was still reading her blog.  From time to time,  I considered letting her blog go during one of my feed purges, but each time I let her be.  Why?

Kathryn is young. She’s pretty.  She’s occasionally funny.  She’s occasionally heartbreaking (to me, as a mom).  She’s occasionally boring.  She’s just a normal abnormal normal young woman.  So why keep her blog? A few days ago I decided  I keep her blog because of her photos.  Almost every entry includes a photo that she has taken of herself.  No I’m not a leche.  I’m not stalking the kid.  That’s not why the photos have kept me reading and watching.

Today’s post from Kathryn explains it.  Kathryn seems obsessed with herself and I like that.  It makes me incredibly happy. Young women should be obsessed with themselves.  With their bodies. With their feelings.  With finding their place in the world.  There is nothing wrong with that.  NOTHING.

Your world, it’s all about you.  It’s good, even when it isn’t.  Liking your life, even when you don’t- that’s what it is all about.  Kathryn knows that – she’s young and she’s got it figured out.  I like that and respect it. Don’t you?

Daily Dose of Weight – GAIN

I hope I’m not jinxing myself here but I’m sort of happy about this and feeling confident about it so I’m going to share it… I. have. gained. weight.   And it appears as though the. weight. is. sticking.

It’s relatively normal for me to gain a bit of weight, enough so my pants aren’t falling off and enough so TW doesn’t have to ask "when was the last time you ate" every darn day but  it is sort of rare for me to keep that weight for more than a couple of weeks at a time.

At first I thought this was a fluke related to item number 25 on my 101 things list.  Then I thought it was related to my menstrual cycle.  But no, I think this might be real honest to goodness weight gain that might just stick if I don’t forget to eat for awhile.

Do me a favor, don’t comment about how you wish you had this problem because you don’t.  Just be happy for me and think good food thoughts for the next month or so.  I really dislike having to hold my jeans up when I walk and I also dislike hearing TW ask me when I last ate.  And I really, really dislike Michelle growling over my falling down jeans.

Daily Dose of Ice Cream

Freecone
Yippeee! It’s Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s.  I’m oh so very excited – umm not really.  I don’t do ice cream.  I’m just a little excited though because this is a great day for so many people.  I’m also a little sad because there are a lot of women "watching their weight" who either won’t partake in the celebration or will partake and then berate themselves about it for the rest of the week.

As someone who spends her life encouraging people to make healthy food choices, I’m encouraging you to go and enjoy a free cone and leave the guilt outside the door.  Moderation is a good thing.  An occasional fun food splurge is healthy.  Have the ice cream cone, get some exercise and reduce your calorie intake a wee bit in other areas of the day if you really must.

If I was going to have a cone, which I’m not, it would probably be the Chocolate Fudge Brownie (did you know they have an organic version now?) because it brings back nice memories … or maybe the Karamel Sutra because that also brings back some umm memories. What’s your favorite flavor?  Any special B&J ice cream memories in your life?
