Daily Dose of Cupcakes

ny.jpgMy sister is heading to NYC for her birthday celebration so let’s do NYC cupcake toppers. Statue of Liberty Pins or buttons would be nice. Or maybe you prefer the NYC taxi experience? How about the Empire State Building? I can’t choose because I love it all – which means I’d end up with the basic I love NYC topper. Then again, I’m not a huge fan of the “I ‘heart’…” phrase so I’d probably order these instead.

They make me crazy

I think I spent my entire Tuesday on the phone. I made my last phone call around 7:30 last night and decided I should extend my phone day by calling Jenn to see how her drive to Charlotte had gone – and to see what plans she and my mother had made for her visit. It’s a good thing I called.

Jenn had not called her grandmother because “I was waiting for her to call me. And besides, I don’t have her phone number.” Umm hello! Grandma is old, you should not rely on her to call YOU. And also you’ve known you were going to Charlotte for ages, if you didn’t have her phone number why didn’t you ask? Geez, the kid does this stuff just to make me crazy.

So I gave Jenn the number and instructed her to hang up the phone and call her immediately. Apparently she did because I got an email from my mother shortly afterwards with a plea for birthday related help. Because my mother is also trying to make me crazy.

My mother thought Jenn was only in Charlotte for one day, Monday. So she mailed Jenn’s birthday gift to her home on Monday afternoon, leaving her with no gift to present when they see each other. (And anyone who has grandchildren, particular granddaughters born in August, knows they do not see the child empty handed. That just would not do.)

Michelle and I brainstormed gift ideas and I called my mother, who did not answer. She returned my call shortly afterwards and informed me that besides thinking Jenn was only going to be in town for one day, she did not have Jenn’s number to call and arrange a dinner. Geez.

I think I’m getting everyone in my family an address book and I’m going to gift it to them with all of the addresses and phone numbers already filled in. And, when we all gather together at Christmas I’m going to confiscate everyone’s cell phone and enter all of the phone numbers, email addresses and addresses into the phones.

My family is crazy and they are making ME crazy.

I’m a lame date. And also, old

Prince J and I had a date last night. As TW says, it was our dream date. Which isn’t quite accurate but close or maybe not so close if you ask the Prince. He was a little annoyed with me and will probably choose another date in the future – one who has more stamina than I do. Particularly when it comes to Star Wars.

The evening started well. The little kids were gone, gone I sayyyyyy hahahahhaha, errrr, yea they were gone and we were happy. Michelle was invited to join our date but she graciously declined and instead stayed in her room pacing the floor for 3 1/2 hours waiting for TW to come home. Perfect atmosphere – no little kids and Michelle quietly stewing upstairs.

We had the perfect meal. Grilled cheese and salt n vinegar chips and Dr Pepper (which has become Prince J’s favorite soda – he’s channeling Chris now that Chris has moved out?). After dinner, without little kids interrupting our fascinating conversation or TW asking ridiculous questions and expecting an actual answer, we moved to the living room. I unplugged the turtle’s filter because it is LOUD and then put The Empire Strikes Back into the DVD player.

This might actually be the perfect movie for our date night. “I am your father!” “Come to the dark side!” – two often quoted phrases in this house. Prince J and I both prefer the “bad guys” over the good guys in this movie. The Princess is an idiot and Lando Calrissian, well I can’t say what I think in mixed company but it has to do with male anatomy and a large dull knife… Luke is just a wuss and I have no idea why anyone would give that boy any power much less “The Force!” So yea, Prince J and I made fun of various characters, questioned the plot line and the cinematography.

And then it was over. And a great success. But here’s the bad part, the part that makes me old and lame. Prince J was all set to watch Return of the Jedi. I got queasy and a little pale and then turned green at the idea of trying to sit through another 2 hours of Star Wars. Errr sorry dude, I am old and we can’t stay up all night. My goal is to actually WATCH these, not sleep through them as I’ve done off and on for 20 years.

Prince J hmphed, grumbled about my age and how long it was going to take us to make it through four more Star Wars movies and shuffled upstairs to his room where I’m sure he opened some secret blog and ranted about me for hours to a bunch of 13 year olds. Or maybe he didn’t since I redeemed myself a bit by offering him a Krispy Kreme to make up for it.

Teaching Lyra to Sing

So the bird. Lyra is her name but I just call her bird. Which is better than what I call the rat.

When RJ is not here for long stretches of time, the bird moves to our bedroom. I think I like this development even less than I like F*** Elvis in here. (See I told you calling Lyra “Bird” was better than what I call the rat.) I really am not a bird person and while I did find it amusing to hear the pissed off little baby voice coming out of Jenn’s mouth when she heard RJ got a bird, “No fair, you never let me get a birdddddddd!!!!”, I’ve really disliked having this creature in my life. I particularly dislike it when TW gets her out of the cage and she flies all over the darn place and I really dislike it when she does this while I’m in a phone meeting. I also dislike it when the bird hisses at me while I”m getting clothes out of my dresser. The hissing obviously means the bird dislikes me as much as I dislike it.

But. The bird also seems to appreciate me enough to learn things from me.

It now can whistle, like I do. It also makes some really weird noises that I could not place but have grudgingly decided to admit sound surprisingly like laptop keyboard noises – and mouse clicking noises. So – I’ve taught it to whistle. I’ve taught it to make keyboarding and mouse noises. Now I am attempting to teach it music. Music that RJ likes and that I like.

I’m trying to teach it to sing or whistle “Emotional Girl”. She definitely loves the music. She will sing and make every noise she has ever made and flutter her wings and whistle non-stop while it is on. She also seems to appreciate Terri Clark’s version of “Poor Poor Pitiful Me” but the Zevon version puts her to sleep. I may dislike the bird, but at least she has good taste in music – or maybe she just appreciates a woman who looks really good in a hat.
