Daily Dose of Cupcake Toppers – Little Dude

target.gifToday is Little Dude’s birthday so our cupcake topper ideas are especially for him. The easiest and most obvious toppers would be Battlestar Galactica (stick a trading card in each cupcake?) or Star Wars (top each cupcake with a miniature?) oriented. I’m thinking he deserves something extra special though – how about Target Bullseyes instead?

We could print the Target logo on cardstock and put one on each cupcake? Or better yet, how about grabbing a bunch of white poker chips and painting the Target bullseye on there? I think they’d be a hit!

Happy Birthday, Little Dude. Enjoy your movie and your cake and your presents!

Traditionally Built Women ROCK!

I love the No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency books. I really like listening to them on audio more than reading them. I think they’re the perfect audio book. (If you haven’t tried it, check one out from your library on cd or cassette. I bet you’ll like it.)

Blue Shoes and Happiness is my favorite in the series. Feminism! Shoes! Cobras! Ostriches! Diets! Lots and lots of feminism. Heh.

When is the next installment coming out? I don’t want to wait a year (or more? gasp!) for the next one. Get to work Dr McCall Smith!

The Moonstone

Well ladies, and gentlemen (surely there are some men lurking), I did it. Finally. It took me 10 years and many, MANY false starts but I did it. I. Finished. The. Moonstone.

I didn’t ever think I’d be able to say that. But now that I have said it, I’m quite pleased with myself. I’m not really pleased with my mother who purchased the book for my daughter 10 years ago. I’m not really pleased with my mother who rambled about how much she loved the book when she was a teenager. I’m also not pleased with my mother who has generally recommended really fantastic books in the past. I’m also not pleased with my mother who on one other occasion recommended a book in a similar way, A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, and that recommendation was so RIGHT that it led me to believe that any such recommendation would also be RIGHT.

The Moonstone. Not right.

I like Wilkie Collins. The Woman in White is a very good book. I’ve actually read it two or three times and enjoyed it everytime. I would happily recommend that book to you. The Moonstone. Not so much. In fact, except for 3 pages very near the end, I wouldn’t really recommend it at all. Except of course, there’s my mom. She loved it when she was a teen (or so she said, 10 years ago – she’s waivered a bit on that over the years – that’s the dementia though, so we expect that from her now).

Anyway, I’ve finished it. I’m proud of myself for having finished it. I’m proud of myself for being able to cross book #1 off of my summer reading challenge.

Now onto bigger and better things…. The Day My Butt Went Psycho… gotta be bigger and better than The Moonstone, right?

Daily Dose of Stuff – Monday

MondayjuneSort of lame today, (particularly in comparison to Lee’s What is this doing in my house, Monday entry),  but I’m tired and The Moonstone is bugging me so I went with the closest oddity to me.   Yes, these are in my bedroom, leaning against the bedside table.  One is about 4′ and the other 3′.   There are a few more, in the 6′ range, in the garage and some in the backyard.

TW bought these a few years ago when she was working out how to build her square foot gardens.  These pieces of trim, or whatever they are suppose to be, never got used in the garden and they’ve been in my way ever since.

Every morning when I put the dogs out with their food, these things fall over on me or slip just enough that I don’t notice they’ve slipped ’til I try and close the door.  I just sigh, or curse under my breath, and move them.

I preferred it when they were in the garage or outside.  Last week they wound up in our bathroom – in the shower, to be exact.  TW was using them as RAMPS for ELVIS.  Elvis is either really dumb or really smart and showed no interest in TW’s constructions.  So the wood is out of the shower and in our bedroom instead.

Joy.

What weirdness is in your house and why is it there?

Daily Dose of Coffee – Bloggersfuel

I’ve fallen behind with the Bloggersfuel reviews, sorry.  I’ve fallen behind on all sorts of things, it isn’t the coffee.  The coffee has been good.  Some better than others but none have been bad.  Let’s do a quick review.   Blogs of Bravery, not so good.  New Media Mavericks, excellent!  (though the description is not quite right)

We tried Late Night Log in and I thought it was just ok, TW liked it a lot and said she could almost give up Coke for this coffee.  Weird, it wasn’t that good.  I wouldn’t even give up Coke for it and I’m not a Coke fan.

Now we’re drinking Pajama Passion which I’ve been really excited to try because of some of the other reviews.  It seemed like this weekend would be a good weekend for it, since we’re hoping to be in our pajamas (or nude) for as much of the weekend as is humanly possible…. so far so good with that, by the way.

So first thing you need to know is that neither TW or I like flavored coffees very much.  TW less so than me, it seems.  She’s having a strongly negative reaction to this coffee.  In fact she made fun of me for sniffing the bag – which is sooo wrong because she and RJ sniff food constantly, drives me totally batty.  You’d think she could have been slightly understanding and a little accommodating when I felt the need to sniff.  But she didn’t.  She’s complained a lot about the scent.  It’s strong and I like it.

I think the problem is her nose isn’t working properly this weekend.  She says it smells (and tastes) like Irish Creme – I don’t think so.  I think it smells like coffee and caramel, duh.

It also tastes like coffee & caramel.  It mentions Kahlua on the label and I’m not a Kahlua fan so I’m happy it doesn’t really taste like Kahlua.  I bet Kahlua drinkers would like this coffee with a shot of Kahlua, though.  (Wow, I’ve never typed the word Kahlua so many times in my life.  It was sort of fun.  Almost makes me wish I liked Kahlua.  Have you typed Kahlua, try it, the letter combination – I like it.  Kahlua.  Oh sorry, I know, I’m weird.)

I’m looking forward to two more pots of this very nice flavored coffee.  I wonder if I will get to drink it all myself or if the big kids will join me.  I don’t really want to share….

Daily Dose of Pet Peeves – Tagging

I have finally embraced tagging.  Not quite in all its glory but in as much of its glory as I can handle with my life and my schedule.  I’ve found tagging incredibly helpful in tracking down blogs or blog posts about a particular subject.  I have some tag searches set up to feed me anything that is tagged with key words like "diet" and "webmd" and "onlinecommunity" or "communityindicator" "womenshealth" … stuff like that.  I find interesting stuff through those tag searches.  Sometimes I find pure garbage.  Sometimes I find things that are tagged improperly.  It’s the stuff that’s tagged improperly that is ticking me off right now.

There is one particular newspaper, located in my area of the world – a large newspaper (relatively speaking) – with a female blogger (cool!).  This female blogger is tagging every single post she makes with the technorati tag "blogher" and I’m getting annoyed.  Some of her posts are sort of interesting.  But,  I’m to the point now that I won’t even go to her blog because when I do, she’s not blogging about blogher, darn it.  She’s drawing me there with the promise of  "blogher" and she’s giving me – other stuff.    (She did blog about Blogher… once… and it was awesome that she
promoted my partner in health that way. Very Cool. So she obviously has been
to Blogher. She knows about the website.  She’s listed her blog in the Blogher blogroll, too)

I’m all for promoting the Blogher conference in any way shape or form, but this particular newspaper blogger is bugging me.  I wish she’d quit it.  She’s not actually promoting Blogher by tagging this way.   I know, I sound all grouchy and like some sort of "tag police", whatever.  It’s a pet peeve.  Pet peeves make me grouchy.

Daily Dose of Life – 101 Things Update

OK so it’s June already.  How did that happen?  May was an odd month, the hours dragged but the days flew by.  Weird.  I’d like it the other way around.

So anyway, about the 101 things list.  I have absolutely no idea what progress I made – or didn’t make.  Hang on, let me look… ummm not good.

Michelle has started her recipe book, started in the loosest sense of the word.  She has a book.  She has some cool scrapbook paper.  That’s about it.

I cleaned out some of the big freezer – maybe half? I guess that’s a start, isn’t it?

Heh, I managed to download a lot of new music and of course more books were read.  The Moonstone WILL be crossed off my list soon.  The book is on my desk, just waiting to be picked up and FINISHED.

I sent birthday cards but didn’t send a graduation gift – does the lack of shipping the gift cancel out the sending of the cards?    I’m pretty sure we hit a restaurant or two, I’ll have to double check.

I talked a good bit about blogrolls and stuff but I’ve done nothing, no updates at all – not even the “new discoveries”. Maybe this weekend, someone remind me!

As you can see, not much progress.  It was a weird month.  Next month will be better.  Or it won’t.   That’s life, eh?
