101 Things Update

Look! An update! Only one day into a new month. Does this mean I’m not nearly as stressed as previous months? Or does it mean I’m organized to the limit because I am stressed? Care to guess? OK enough playing around, on with the update which again is boring as hell.

We attempted another book on audio but it was a cassette and cassette 2 refused to play. HMPH. I need to see if I have any books on audio reserved, I’m wondering if we should try Eclipse on audio since the reviews have been less than stellar…. maybe the audio would improve things?

I’m tempted to remove the spend the day in a bookstore from the list – or consider it done – since we spend just about every Sunday in a bookstore. Granted, it isn’t a bookstore I enjoy spending time in but I do still sift the racks and soak up words that I would not otherwise soak up.

The biggest news of the month, in terms of the 101 list, is that I was able to stay awake through the original three Star Wars movies. (For you young folks who are confused, that would be episodes 4,5 and 6.) Prince J and I plan to sit through the other three very soon. As expected, Return of the Jedi was very difficult for me to stay awake for. I cannot figure out why so many people told me that was their favorite of the original three. BORING. Ho freaking hum.

And last but certainly not least we made it six months without Gator Food.

Deer Hunting with Jesus

And to think I almost skipped reading Deer Hunting with Jesus, that would have been a shame particularly since I’ve invoked the “C word” quite a bit over the last few months.

Liberals, (politicians and their supporters), should do themselves (and the country) a favor and read Deer Hunting with Jesus. Then, spend some time figuring out how to talk to the working class poor because the status quo is simply not cutting it. Millions of people in this country are under-educated, over-worked and under-paid and they do not have time, interest or knowledge to sort out the rhetoric and propaganda. They can’t relate to wealthy politicians of any political persuasion but they can relate to the conservative BS that scares them or inspires them and doesn’t make it necessary for them to do any thinking – all they have to do is believe in God, Country and Family … and they do. A little healthy fear of people who aren’t like them gets tossed in for good measure and the republican vote is all locked up.

As an aside, it was a pleasant surprise to skim through the Acknowledgments for the book and see one of my favorite blogs listed: Peacebang… Joe Bageant has great taste in religious bloggers.

Daily Dose of Cupcakes

ny.jpgMy sister is heading to NYC for her birthday celebration so let’s do NYC cupcake toppers. Statue of Liberty Pins or buttons would be nice. Or maybe you prefer the NYC taxi experience? How about the Empire State Building? I can’t choose because I love it all – which means I’d end up with the basic I love NYC topper. Then again, I’m not a huge fan of the “I ‘heart’…” phrase so I’d probably order these instead.

They make me crazy

I think I spent my entire Tuesday on the phone. I made my last phone call around 7:30 last night and decided I should extend my phone day by calling Jenn to see how her drive to Charlotte had gone – and to see what plans she and my mother had made for her visit. It’s a good thing I called.

Jenn had not called her grandmother because “I was waiting for her to call me. And besides, I don’t have her phone number.” Umm hello! Grandma is old, you should not rely on her to call YOU. And also you’ve known you were going to Charlotte for ages, if you didn’t have her phone number why didn’t you ask? Geez, the kid does this stuff just to make me crazy.

So I gave Jenn the number and instructed her to hang up the phone and call her immediately. Apparently she did because I got an email from my mother shortly afterwards with a plea for birthday related help. Because my mother is also trying to make me crazy.

My mother thought Jenn was only in Charlotte for one day, Monday. So she mailed Jenn’s birthday gift to her home on Monday afternoon, leaving her with no gift to present when they see each other. (And anyone who has grandchildren, particular granddaughters born in August, knows they do not see the child empty handed. That just would not do.)

Michelle and I brainstormed gift ideas and I called my mother, who did not answer. She returned my call shortly afterwards and informed me that besides thinking Jenn was only going to be in town for one day, she did not have Jenn’s number to call and arrange a dinner. Geez.

I think I’m getting everyone in my family an address book and I’m going to gift it to them with all of the addresses and phone numbers already filled in. And, when we all gather together at Christmas I’m going to confiscate everyone’s cell phone and enter all of the phone numbers, email addresses and addresses into the phones.

My family is crazy and they are making ME crazy.

The Master of Secrets

Oh boy, another book about God and Jesus. How did that happen? The Master of Secrets wasn’t half bad. A “man behind the curtain”, anti-Christ character and a lost boy. Interesting and troubling and then redeeming. Which is sort of what Christianity is all about, isn’t it?

Not bad at all. But I am sooo done with religion at this point. Maybe TW will let me stay home from church on Sunday. Surely I’ve read enough about God this week to get time off for good behavior… (and how is it that I do not have a religion sub-category in the “books” topic area? weird, very weird.)

Religious Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know – and Doesn’t

Well. Religious Literacy…. was interesting in places. And boring as hell in other places. Pretty much like religion in general, in my never humble opinion.

I would definitely agree with the author, the US is a country full of believers who are ridiculously uninformed or misinformed about the religion they say the belong to. And they know even less about religions they do not belong to.

I would also agree with the author that removing religion, and The Bible in particular, from public education settings was probably not the best idea. The problem is that I don’t think there is any good solution to the problem. Americans are quick to cry foul and no matter what you do someone is definitely going to cry foul.
